4 tips to finally feel comfortable teleworking

Telecommuting is a way of working that more and more of you have adopted since the 2020 pandemic. However, it's a real change in habits, and the transition can be tricky if you don't get it right. To help you, here are our 4 tips to finally feel comfortable teleworking.

1. Find your good position

To become more efficient in your work, there is one essential element to consider: ergonomics. You can't concentrate for the time you need to if you're not sitting comfortably. You might think that this is just a detail, that any position is good, that any chair will do. And yet, Ergonomics is the first criterion you should take into account to finally be comfortable with teleworking.

According to studies carried out by the IDEWE group, which specialises in prevention and well-being at work, too few employees adopt the right gestures when they work at home. They tend to opt for a poor sitting posture over a long period of time. This usually has a negative impact on the lower back and neck. And these musculoskeletal disorders are the bane of teleworkers' existence.

When teleworking, most of the day is spent sitting. That's why it's a good idea to get a good office chair. And preferably a chair that can at least be adjusted in height.

To adjust, stand back in your chair and adjust the height, making sure your feet are flat on the floor. Also make sure that your pelvis is slightly higher than your hips. If your table is too high, then increase the height of your chair, and use a footrest.

2. Free up space

Contrary to popular belief, working from home requires much more mental effort. Indeed, when you work at home, you are more prone to distractions, and it will not always be easy for you to concentrate as you should. In order to remedy this, you need to ensure that your workspace is optimized to allow you to concentrate as best as you can. 

Optimize your workspace storage

To do this, start by avoid leaving all your stuff lying around on your desk. Plan on a storage shelf for all your paper documents for example. By keeping your desk as tidy and uncluttered as possible, you will be able to organise yourself better on a daily basis.

Also consider a small storage area where you can put all your small accessories (pens, calculators, note sheets, etc.). These small storage spaces should be within easy reach. So make sure you don't have to get up to get the smallest accessory you might need. 

Limit your workspace

As we said earlier, you are working from home, in a place that is not necessarily conducive to concentration, especially if you were used to working in an office. In order to overcome this obstacle, you must mark out your work area.

Choose a fixed room in your home, set up your office and all the necessary equipment for your professional activity. Then make sure that you spend your working hours there, just as you would if you were working in a corporate office. This will make it easier for you to avoid the temptations of leisure and entertainment at home. By properly delimiting your workspace, you will be able to stay focused on your tasks.

If you don't have a room of your own that is isolated from the other rooms in your home, then try to create a separation by using a glass roof, furniture, or an awning for example. Even if the separation can sometimes seem derisory, know that it will always have a psychological benefit for you. As long as you're in your own little workspace, you'll know what to do, and then you'll be better able to complete your professional assignments.

3. Start small

If you are just starting to telecommute, be aware that this is a transition period that should not be taken lightly. If you were previously working in a corporate environment, and left your home to go to the office every day, then the change that telecommuting brings can be very unsettling. 

This is quite normal. Any change, no matter how small, takes time to adjust. So you can imagine that if you have to start working from home, almost all your habits will be turned upside down.

You no longer have to get up at the crack of dawn to catch the metro. You no longer work within the same walls on a daily basis. You don't have to meet your office colleagues to talk to during breaks. You no longer have lunch at the company canteen or the local restaurant. In short, there are many changes.

All of this takes time to adjust. And to make this transition a success, it is advisable to take things one step at a time. Start by reviewing the tasks you need to do in your first few weeks of telecommuting. As much as possible, start by doing tasks that are easily accomplished.

Avoid too many professional challenges when you start teleworking. You need to get used to your new working environment before you can take it to the next level. With time and practice, you will have the motivation and mental resources to perform more and more complicated tasks and be comfortable teleworking.

Well, all you have to do is build a work environment that is conducive to both well-being and concentration. Indeed, even for telecommuting, interior design plays a significant role.
